Espen Håland: Drums
Jonas Hovland: Vocal
Ole Egeli: Guitar and Vocal

Day 1 (21.08.04)
The day started with Espen and a friend came to the studio and started unloading their cars with drums. The drums where moved into the studio and we started putting it together. We had the whole day to set it up and prepare and experiment with different sounds. Espen borrowed a friend’s Alesis Dm trigger module that we should use on the kick drums.

When Espen was finished putting all the drums, cymbals etc on it, I started to mount the mics. The next thing we did was to connect the trigger module, adjust and finding the right kick sound. We ended that night planning what we should do the next day.

Day 2 (22.08.04)
This day started at about 11 when Espen, Magnus and Jon Arvid entered the studio with the guitar and bass guitars. The plan for this day was to do a test trial and check the sound. Figure out what kick drum sound we should use etc. The first thing we noticed was that the trigger module was not triggered right and there was some double hits. This was quickly corrected by filling the kick drums with blankets.

We plugged the bass and guitar into the mixer and stared jamming on one of the songs. We sat down and listened and decided on a kick sound. This was done quite fast and we had a lot of time to kill, so we figured we’ll start laying the drums down.

Espen, Magnus and Jan Arvid played very well and we actually managed to track all 10 songs before we ended the night planning the next weekend at 21.00

Day 3 (27.08.09)
This was the day for tracking the bass. Before Just after leaving work, sitting in my car driving to the studio, a Michael called form a concert venue that we where planning to see Kreator later that night. He asked if they could borrow our drum kit for the Kreator concert. Damn, I called Fove right away and he was very excited about it and we said Yes, Sure to Michael.

After calling the K[nine] members and telling them that this evening was going to be very short because we need to transport the drum kit to Sandnes. They decided to still come to the studio before me and Fove left with the equipment because they had the guitar and bass amps +++ that they would like to install first.

Espen, Jan Arvid, Magnus and Jonas arrived and they started to install the amps. Me and Fove that also came shortly after started to tear down Foves drum kit and putting it in our cars. Jonas decided that he wanted to sleep over, so he was in charge of the rest of the night.

I and Fove arrived at Sandnes and Tribute with the kit, and we started to unload our cars while the rain pored down like hell. Me and Fove was invited to be guest at the Kreator concert and we where very pleased with that.

Day 4 (28.08.04)
This day started at 11 or 12 when Jan Arvid and Magnus arrived. Jonas was already there. We started to tear down the rest of K[nine]’s drum kit (we borrowed Espen’s frame for the Kreator concert), and the started to mic the bass amp.

The day before we realized that we already had a great sound from the bass just plugged into the board, but decided that we should mic the amp as well. We ended up with 3 tracks just for the bass;
1. 15” ampeg cab
2. Track Elliot cab
3. Direct to the board

By mixing the tracks we should get a really full sound and we can mix these sounds to become a whole powerful bass. We started tracking the bass and we ended up with 4 whole songs that day. Very good. K[nine] left the studio at 16.00 because me and Fove where going to se our old heroes Kreator.

Magnus and Jan Arvid tracking the bass. Jonas is relaxing.

Day 5 (29.08.04)
I entered the studio at 11 and started unloading half of Foves drum kit into the studio again. Fove arrived minutes later and we unloaded his car too. Espen, Magnus and Jan Arvid arrived after that (12.00, so we started laying down the rest of the bass.

The whole day went on tracking the bass for the rest of the 6 songs, and we ended the day by listening through the songs. Just before we should leave, Jonas came in for a visit.

Our new tech. (Espen). I have been replaced. Magnus relaxing.

Day 6 (03.09.04)

Today was our first day recording guitars for the upcoming K[nine] record.
Espen and Magnus arrived at 18.30 and Magnus started plugging in his guitar and effects. I started to mic the cabinet and shortly after we found the sound that really kicked some ass.

We recorded one song with guitars and we just finished that when Jonas arrived. We listened through it a couple of times and we moved on to record the second song. We decided that we should record all the guitars for one song before moving on.

The night ended at about 11 or 11.30 and we where finished with two songs.
Tomorrow we’ll continue with more songs. Magnus is really giving it all now..

Day 7 (04.09.04)

Today was another great day in the studio. Today Ragnar (me), Magnus and Espen entered the studio at 12.00. Magnus is laying down all the guitars for this album and he is really well prepared. Today we recorded all the guitars for 5 songs and there is still 3 songs waiting to be filled with beautiful noise.

For the first time in this project Ole joined us, to listen to the songs and hang out with his new band members. Ole joined this project officially this week.

Jonas joined us at 18.00 and stayed until we decided to end the day at about 22.00. Hopefully we can record all the guitars this weekend and leave up next week off. After that we’ll start the process of hammering the vocals in. Jonas and Ole will hopefully start their preparation as soon as possible.

Day 8 (05.09.04)

Today was yet another great day in the studio. Espen, Jonas, Ole and Magnus arrived at the same time at 12.00 today.
Today’s schedule is to record the rest of the guitars on 3 songs. Magnus started to track down his guitars and he is really well prepared. We used some time to try out different things on different songs, before Jan Arvid arrived at about 17.00 or 18.00.

The last song is devided into two parts, and we started recording the metal part before we went into the full acoustic part. Magnus brought his 12 string and we hammered it down very quickly before Ole got his fingers on a 6 string acoustic.

The day ended with us listening through the whole record and burned out a couple of copies so that Jonas and Ole can sit down and work on the lyrics.

The next thing on the schedule is to mix the drums, bass, guitars and then transfer all the tracks into Cubase. We will then start to fiend the great kick sound we want and maybe replace the snare. This will start this week, and we’ll meet up at Saturday and discuss status, and go from there.

Stay tuned for more metal.

Some acoustic work Espen taking a piss. Ole taking a piss.
Can you imagine what I have to go through with these guys ?!?!?

Info

This weekend we decided that we only should work on Sunday because of a gig and a birthday party. K[nine] played in a local battle of the band in Egersund, where the price was 10.000 NKR. Saturday was a day off too because I had to go to a birthday party (30 years old sister) and there was little time to work before I had to leave.

Day 9 (12.09.04)

Jonas called me with this really strange voice, and he had almost lost his voice and couldn’t sing that night. This was really ok, because I needed to transfer tracks from VS2480 to Cubase SX.

The boyz arrived between 13 and 14 and I had already started to transfer track into Cubase Sx. I had to transfer 16 tracks at once onto Cubase. Every song has 23 to 24 tracks each, so you can imagine this taking some time.

When that was done, me and Espen sat down and listened through my archive of kick and snare sounds and found a couple and tried them. I use Drumagog to replace a kick or snare hit so that we can customize the sound to that we want. These programs work by detecting a hit on the kick or snare, and then replace this with the sound we had chosen. Espen also had a tom that he wanted to replace with a great Boom sound and it worked great.

We finished 3 songs and we sat down and listened, tweaking, listening and tweaking until we got what we wanted. This record is going to really blow some speakers.

17.09.04

Day off.

18.09.04

Me and Espen continued transferring the songs from VS2480 to Cubase and we did some modifications so that the kicks and snares now are really tight and we also worked on the toms.

We ended up tweeking the equalizer so that we ended up with toms that was damn good. Now we are ready for some vocals

19.09.04

We started as usual at about 13.00 and we went straight on to record some vocal tracks for one of the songs. Ole and Jonas needed some time to figure and try out different stuff for this song, and me, Magnus, Jan Arvid and Espen had to leave the studio.

This was a good opportunity to get some food. We drove down to the local store and ordered some food. After a while Ole and Jonas called and said they where ready, so we drove back to start recording some new tracks.
The day ended at about 20 or 21.00

24.09.04

This day started at about 13.00 when Jonas, Ole, Magnus and Espen arrived. We started with listening through what we did last time and then we started to record the next song.
There is nothing much to report other then that we finished 2 songs this day. We ended the session at about 19.00.

25.09.04
